Paula Swinnen

Paula Swinnen (b. 1964)

Born in Brussels, Belgium in 1964, Swinnen resolved to be an artist at an early age. She focused on drawing while in school and attended extracurricular classes at the Academy of Fine Art in Brussels from 1979 to 1984. After school she discovered her true passion to “dessiner en bronze” (draw in bronze), teaching herself the lost-wax method of bronze sculpture and bronze finishing/patination techniques. Swinnen’s sculpture takes the natural world as its source. At first, she created monkey forms, orangutans, and most notably a mountain gorilla, which Swinnen produced for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Later, Swinnen expanded her figural repertoire to nearly every branch of the animal kingdom, including birds, insects, even a life-sized camel. In recent years, Swinnen has incorporated her sculptural technique in unique pieces of design furniture that are an ode to nature. Bernd Goeckler Inc. has been proudly working with Swinnen for nearly two decades to bring their clients custom, unique bronze pieces.
